Wallström made the statement during a joint press conference with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku.
Wallström said that during her meeting with Mammadyarov she discussed the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the ways to de-escalate tension in the conflict region.
The FM said Sweden supports a negotiated settlement of the conflict, as well as high-level discussions at the level of the OSCE MG co-chairs.
“At the meeting, I asked my Azerbaijani counterpart what he thinks Sweden could do as a Minsk Group member to bring up the issue. We are ready to play this role,” she noted.
The main players in the process are the co-chairs, Wallström said, stressing the need for work to achieve a peaceful settlement.
“We have to achieve a solution to the problem in consideration of the principles of territorial integrity, non-escalation of violence, and people’s right to self-determination. Perhaps there may be a need for enlarged meetings. We are making this proposal and we are ready for it,” she added.
