He made the remarks during the discussion on Nagorno-Karabakh at the Moscow Carnegie Center Apr. 19.
The CSTO is also unable to intervene in the ongoing clashes along the Azerbaijani-Armenian border, he added.
“Imagine that the Azerbaijani tanks are in Yerevan. Will Kazakhstan’s tanks stand against Azerbaijan’s tanks?” the expert said.
Malashenko stressed that Azerbaijan knocked Armenia down in the first round of the military confrontation in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Russian political scientist on Caucasus Sergey Rumyantsev, who joined the discussion via video call from Germany, the flare-up of the Nagorno-Karabakh is not surprising.
“Azerbaijan has always openly stated that it will resort to military means, if Armenian troops don’t withdraw from the occupied territories,” he noted.
Rumyantsev said the war in the region is inevitable, if Armenia doesn’t refrain from its path. “Azerbaijani and Armenian troops are standing face to face on the contact line. There are not peacekeeping forces in that area. Thus, nobody should get surprised over the crashes.”
He went on to add that the war in the region is now a reality. “None of the parties want to compromise. Therefore, what is happening is natural. Such cases will also occur from now on. The war in Nagorno-Karabakh is a reality,” he underlined.
